And a note on the number itself: an accuracy figure is a rate plus a convention for what counts as a miss. Ours grades every taken pitch against the rulebook zone as the feed reports it. Others are more forgiving — UmpScorecards counts a call wrong only when the pitch was at least 90% likely to be a strike — so two sites can print the same percentage about the same umpire and not mean the same thing by it. The overturn rate is a different kind of number and does not belong beside the grade: it is accuracy on the 109 pitches players chose to challenge, which are the pitches they already believed were wrong. 109 is enough to print it with its own denominator, which is what we do — but it still ranks umpires by how often they are appealed, not by how often they are right.
The road to the plate
The Thirteenth Year
Brennan Miller started umpiring before he could drive. The road from Fairfax Station to the youngest umpire in baseball.
Brennan Miller was 13 when he began umpiring in Northern Virginia. He had received a special age exception to work games, and his father drove him to assignments — and served as his umpiring partner until Miller turned 16. He grew up in Fairfax Station, attended South County High School, and was calling games before he could drive.
He graduated from the MiLB Umpire Academy in 2013, then spent seven years climbing through the New York-Penn League, the Florida State League, the Southern League, and the International League. He has described that path as a long and treacherous road. It carried him to his major league debut on April 20, 2019 — a call-up assignment for a doubleheader between the Orioles and Twins in Baltimore.
That first season brought an early test. In July 2019, Miller ejected Yankees manager Aaron Boone during a profanity-laced argument over balls and strikes calls involving Brett Gardner and DJ LeMahieu. MLB suspended Boone one game for making contact with Miller during the exchange.
After a record ten umpires retired following the 2022 season, MLB promoted Miller to the permanent staff in 2023. He wears uniform number 55 and in 2024 joined Chris Conroy's crew, with Conroy as crew chief. His first postseason assignment came that year: the National League Wild Card Series between the Milwaukee Brewers and New York Mets.
When Miller worked the 2025 season opener at Dodger Stadium, he was the youngest member of his crew — and the youngest umpire in all of Major League Baseball, a distinction he had held since his 2019 arrival. The record on this page covers 18 games he has worked behind the plate this season.
