Four lead changes preceded the eighth, when Will Vest took the mound and gave up five earned runs on four hits and a walk across 1.1 innings. Kevin McGonigle's first triple of the year, a two-run ball in the fifth, had put Detroit ahead, but José Fermín's 1.1 innings of clean relief — three strikeouts on 15 pitches — kept the Angels close enough to strike. The Angels left seven on base and still scored ten, and Jack Kochanowicz's four innings of five-run ball meant the bullpen had to cover five frames.
