The fifth inning decided it, and Jack Flaherty was still on the mound when it happened. Sebastián Rivero's single started it, Zach Neto's double followed, and Vaughn Grissom's sacrifice fly was the third run, turning a 1-0 Detroit lead into a deficit Flaherty carried into the sixth before leaving. He struck out nine in five and two-thirds innings and took the loss. Grayson Rodriguez gave the Angels five innings of two-hit ball and turned it to a bullpen that allowed one hit over the final four. Wenceel Pérez's home run in the second had given Detroit its only lead, and the Tigers managed three hits all night, the one run they scored coming before the fifth inning started.
