Jeff Hoffman faced six batters and recorded one out. Leody Taveras tripled to right to open the ninth, Jackson Holliday singled him home, and then Hoffman walked both Gunnar Henderson and Adley Rutschman with the bases loaded — two runs that scored on pitches the hitter never swung at. Five earned runs on three hits and two walks in a third of an inning. Brandon Young had given Baltimore 6.2 innings of two-run ball on 86 pitches, and Kazuma Okamoto's two-run double in the eighth had given Toronto its cushion. What Hoffman did with it is the kind of ninth inning that follows a man onto the plane.
