Alex Bregman's three-run homer in the second — an 87.2 mph cutter at 2-0 — turned a 1-1 game into 4-1, and the Padres spent the rest of the night climbing. Dansby Swanson hit two home runs, the second a two-run shot in the fifth that came one inning after Manny Machado's home run had pulled San Diego within a run. JP Sears needed 95 pitches to get through 4.2 innings and left having allowed seven runs. Matthew Boyd gave Chicago five innings on 76 pitches — 49 strikes — and turned a lead over to a bullpen that let the Padres get close but never all the way back. Both clubs finished with 13 hits. San Diego left eight on base and lost by two.
