Wood's home run in the first — a 94.6 mph fastball sent 434 feet to center — was his 28th of the year, and it gave Washington the first lead of four that would change hands. The Yankees tied it in the fifth on singles by Chisholm and Wells, both line drives to right fielder James Wood. Rice's triple in the eighth, a sharp fly to left that scored Schuemann and Grisham, was the one that held. Blackburn threw 21 pitches over two innings, and Caballero's ninth-inning sac fly gave him a cushion he did not need.
