Matthew Boyd and Dustin May combined for twelve scoreless innings and neither factored in the decision, which is the cruelty of extra innings. Pete Crow-Armstrong's two-run homer in the top of the tenth — on an 81.1 mph changeup — should have won it. Trent Thornton got two outs and allowed three runs, the last two scoring on Iván Herrera's 111.3 mph double to left, and the Cardinals walked off with a win that belonged to nobody's starting pitcher. The Cubs managed three hits in ten innings.
