Tyler Tolbert's third-inning home run gave Kansas City a lead Randy Dobnak never relinquished. Dobnak scattered four hits over seven innings and never let Minnesota threaten, and the Royals added single runs in the fourth and fifth — a Nick Loftin sacrifice fly and a Carter Jensen double — to make it 4-0. Joe Ryan struck out four and walked none but allowed eight hits in six innings and lost. Kansas City left nine on base and still had enough, because Minnesota managed five hits and left six.
