St. Louis led twice and lost both leads, the second one in the tenth when Alex Bregman and Ian Happ hit consecutive doubles into right field. Andre Pallante had given the Cardinals six and a third innings and left with a one-run advantage, and the bullpen held it until Luis Gastelum's twenty-one-pitch tenth. JJ Wetherholt's home run in the seventh — a 77.9 mph sweeper sent 406 feet — had tied it for St. Louis and forced extras. Bregman's double came on a 2-2 fastball, and Happ followed three pitches later with one to the same spot.
