Daylen Lile's three-run home run in the first inning — his fifteenth of the season, on a 2-0 changeup — gave Cade Cavalli a cushion before he threw a pitch, and Cavalli used it well: six innings, seven hits, three earned, eight strikeouts on a hundred pitches. Cincinnati answered with solo homers from Eugenio Suárez, Matt McLain, and Elly De La Cruz, whose twentieth of the year landed in left field, but never got the tying run. Harry Ford's two-run shot in the fourth, only his second of the season, was the swing that kept the Nationals ahead for good.
