Joshua Báez hit three home runs and the first one barely announced itself. He turned on a 93.4 mph fastball at 0-0 in the first, his first of the season, and by the sixth he had three — the last a no-doubter at 108.6 mph off the bat, 449 feet to right. Matthew Boyd gave up seven earned in 5.1 innings and did not survive the sixth. Michael McGreevy allowed five hits and no earned runs across six, striking out six. Michael Conforto's three-run homer in the second was Chicago's only real answer. Alec Burleson's 20th of the year in the eighth was the last mark on the card. Before this game Báez had not homered all season. Three swings changed that, the last one leaving at 108.6 mph and landing 449 feet from home.
