The overturn rate is a different kind of number and does not belong beside the grade: it is accuracy on the 97 pitches players chose to challenge, which are the pitches they already believed were wrong. 97 is enough to print it with its own denominator, which is what we do — but it still ranks umpires by how often they are appealed, not by how often they are right.

The Southern League
In 1994, Andy Fletcher was umpiring in the Southern League. Michael Jordan was playing for the Birmingham Barons that summer, and over the course of the season Fletcher had arguments with Jordan. The confrontations ended with the ejection of Barons manager Terry Francona. Fletcher was still five years from his first major league game.
He was born in Memphis, Tennessee, on November 17, 1966. He attended the Harry Wendelstedt Umpire School in 1989. Ten years later, he made his major league umpiring debut on August 24, 1999.
The Assignments
He worked the MLB All-Star Game in 2005 and again in 2018. On August 15, 2012, he was the third base umpire for Felix Hernandez's perfect game against the Tampa Bay Rays — one of only 24 perfect games in MLB history. He was selected to work the 2024 World Series, and was promoted to crew chief in 2025.
On July 5, 2026, USA Today's Bob Nightengale reported that Fletcher was one of seven umpires who had accepted a buyout from Major League Baseball to retire after the 2026 season. We have graded him behind the plate in 13 of his games this season.
