The Tigers left ten men on base and committed the one error that cost them a lead they never got back. Victor Scott II's sacrifice bunt in the fifth should have been an out; Enmanuel De Jesus threw it away, and two runs scored on the play before Iván Herrera's single brought in two more. Kerry Carpenter's two-run homer in the third — a 92.9 mph fastball to center — had given Detroit its lead, and Keider Montero left after 4.1 innings with the score tied. The Cardinals needed one clean inning from their bullpen after the fifth, and Ryne Stanek and Riley O'Brien gave them two. Detroit put the tying run on base in the seventh, eighth, and ninth, and did not score in any of them.
