Angel Martínez opened the scoring with his second homer of the year in the first, and St. Louis answered with Burleson's RBI single. That was the last time the game was tied. Schneemann's two-run single in the fourth — a ground ball that found a glove and kept going — put Cleveland ahead for good, and Rocchio's two-run homer in the sixth, his second of the season, gave the bullpen room. Williams threw 93 pitches in five innings and struck out four; the four relievers behind him allowed one run in four. The Cardinals had nine hits and left ten on, which is the shape of a lineup that keeps reaching and never breaks through. By the eighth, Kwan's two-run single and Pagés's sacrifice fly had made it six.
