Cole Ragans gave up one hit in six innings and didn't get the win — the Royals scored once, on a forceout, and Framber Valdez matched him through seven with one run on four hits. Nick Mears gave up two hits and a walk in the eighth, and one of the hits was Dillon Dingler's double on a 93.8 mph fastball that scored Kevin McGonigle. Will Vest struck out the side in the eighth to hold the lead. Kenley Jansen gave up a two-out single in the ninth and still needed only 15 pitches.
