Washington led twice — once in the first, again in the fourth — and then the sixth inning happened. Drake Baldwin doubled in two on a ground ball to left, Ozzie Albies singled in another, Michael Harris II singled in another, and a groundout brought home the fifth run of the inning. Five runs on three hits, and Jake Irvin was already gone by then — he left after five having given up three hits and four runs. Bryce Elder went six and two-thirds for Atlanta, allowed three hits, and struck out six. Daylen Lile's fourth-inning homer, his second of the year on an 81.9 mph slider at 0-0, was the last time Washington was ahead.
