The fourth inning decided this. Gavin Sheets had homered in the second for the game's first run, and by the time the fourth ended, San Diego had scored four more — Castellanos' three-run shot to center on an 0-0 slider, plus a run-scoring forceout. Cole Young's single got one back for Seattle in the same inning. Gilbert's final line was 7 earned across 6.2 innings. Buehler threw 101 pitches in five innings and left with a lead, and Rodolfo Durán hit his first home run of the season in the seventh, a two-run shot to left center with Laureano aboard.
