Fernando Tatis Jr. was hit by a 94.2 mph sinker with the bases loaded in the second inning, and Jackson Merrill crossed the plate with what turned out to be the winning run. J.T. Ginn walked six in 2.1 innings without allowing a hit — both San Diego runs scored on his watch, one on the hit-by-pitch and one on a Ty France groundout. That was every run the Padres needed. Lucas Giolito walked five in five innings and still won, and Oakland left eight on base.
