Gavin Williams threw 94 pitches over seven innings and struck out four, and on a night where the Guardians left nine men on base, that start was the whole margin. CJ Abrams's double in the third left the bat at 108.3 mph and scored the game's first run, but Washington managed five hits all night and did not score again until the ninth. Cleveland's three-run fifth came on a sacrifice fly and two singles, all line drives, and it held up because Tim Herrin threw a clean eighth and Cade Smith gave up one run in the ninth before closing it. Daylen Lile's sacrifice fly to left in the ninth cut the lead to one, and the Nationals did not score again.
