Troy Melton threw seven innings of one-run ball on 89 pitches and left with a lead that held until the ninth and vanished in the tenth. Detroit went ahead in the top of the tenth on Zack Short's sacrifice fly. Drew Anderson entered and gave up a two-run home run to Miguel Vargas — his 13th, to left center — and that ended it. Kyle Finnegan's throwing error on Rikuu Nishida's sacrifice bunt in the ninth had already let Chicago tie the game. The ball got away from first baseman Spencer Torkelson, Andrew Benintendi scored, and Melton's seven innings went to waste. Four hits for Detroit. Ten for Chicago. Dillon Dingler's two-run homer in the third was the only offense the Tigers produced without help.
