Davis's slam — a 91.0 mph fastball at 3-1, 107.7 mph off the bat — gave Pittsburgh a 4-2 lead they carried into the late innings. Gregory Soto faced four hitters in the eighth without recording an out: three hits, three earned runs, one walk, 18 pitches. Nate Pearson gave up three more in the same inning, and a lead Pittsburgh had held since the fourth was gone. Josh Hader worked around a walk in the ninth, striking out one to end it.
