Foster Griffin gave Washington six innings of one-run ball on 100 pitches, and the lead survived until the ninth. Gus Varland faced four batters and three scored; Mitchell Parker needed eight pitches to surrender two more. Three relievers — Schultz, Varland, Parker — gave up ten earned in a combined two innings, and none of them found the out that stopped it. James Wood's 18th home run, a two-run shot in the third on a 94 mph fastball, should have been enough, and the starter who earned his six innings had nothing left to do but watch.
