Canning and Baz both lasted five innings and gave up six hits. The difference was the damage: Canning walked five and surrendered seven earned, while Baz allowed two. Pete Alonso's two-run single in the second — a ground ball deflected by Manny Machado — was the hit that put Baltimore ahead for good, and Gunnar Henderson's fourth-inning home run was the last run the Orioles scored. They did not need another. San Diego left eight on base and never got closer than two.
