Cam Schlittler and Kevin Gausman each threw seven innings and gave up one earned run, and for eight frames the game belonged to the starters. Schlittler allowed six hits and walked four, pitching around trouble all night, while Gausman allowed one hit — Jasson Domínguez's home run — and struck out seven. The difference came in the ninth. Louis Varland threw 13 pitches, gave up two hits, and the second was Paul Goldschmidt's two-run homer on an 87 mph knuckle curve. David Bednar struck out the side in the bottom of the ninth on 13 pitches to save it. Toronto managed one run on six hits.
