Cade Smith needed twenty-eight pitches for two outs in the ninth and gave up home runs to Randal Grichuk and Braden Montgomery, turning a 3-1 lead into a 3-3 tie. Tanner Bibee had thrown six shutout innings on fifty-eight strikes and left with a lead that should have been enough. It was enough, eventually — Kahlil Watson, who had already driven in two in the sixth, singled in the tenth to score Petey Halpin — but the ninth inning cost a bullpen an extra inning it had not planned to throw. Montgomery's second home run of the year was also his second RBI of the night.
