The fifth inning was where Michael King ran out of room. He needed 90 pitches to get through 4.1 innings, walked four, and the bases were loaded when Freddie Freeman took ball four to force in a run. Mookie Betts followed with a 93.8 mph sinker lined to center for two more, and that was King's night. Emmet Sheehan gave the Dodgers five innings of one-run ball on 84 pitches and turned over a lead the bullpen never gave back. The Padres put eight runners on base and scored twice. Manny Machado's homer was one, Xander Bogaerts's single was the other, and after the sixth, nothing crossed.
