Chaparro jumped a 95.3 mph fastball in the first at 1-1, and the Nationals led the rest of the night. The outs that mattered belonged to Andrew Alvarez, who took the ball from Brad Lord with one on in the third and gave 4.2 innings of two-hit relief, striking out six. Three Washington hitters got their first of the season — Chaparro and Nasim Nuñez with home runs, Curtis Mead with a triple — and by the time James Wood went deep for three in the seventh, the game had been settled for innings. Payton Tolle wore the loss across three frames, seven hits and six earned, but he was pitching from behind from the first.
