Seven of the balls the Yankees hit off Rasmussen became hits — six scored — and he was done after 61 pitches in 2.1 innings. Ben Rice's two-run homer, a 3-2 cutter at 89.4 mph, capped the third, but the inning had already turned on singles from Trent Grisham and José Caballero and a sacrifice fly. Junior Caminero's 438-foot home run in the first, off an 0-2 sweeper at 83.5 mph, was the hardest contact of the night and it put Tampa Bay ahead 1-0. The Rays left eight on and never got closer than four.
