Matt Strahm entered a 3-3 tie in the eighth and gave up back-to-back home runs — Isaac Collins's solo shot, then Samuel Basallo's two-run blast that scored Pete Alonso. Twenty-two pitches, two swings, and the lead was gone for good. Brandon Young had given Baltimore seven innings of three-run ball on 85 pitches, keeping the Orioles close enough for the eighth to decide it. Luinder Avila matched him with five innings of three-run ball for Kansas City, and the Royals got nine hits but only three runs.
