The fifth inning is where this one turned — Vladimir Guerrero Jr.'s RBI single tied it, and two batters later Kazuma Okamoto's 22nd home run cleared the bases on a 94.8 mph sinker at 2-2. Three runs across, and Toronto didn't trail again. San Diego collected 10 hits and left nine on base, and that number follows a club home from a two-run loss. Shane Bieber threw 97 pitches to record 14 outs, and the bullpen held: Jeff Hoffman needed 13 pitches for a clean eighth, Tyler Rogers needed eight for his. The Padres brought the tying run to the plate in the ninth before Louis Varland finished it on 26 pitches.
