Bregman's RBI double in the first opened the scoring and his home run in the third made it 3-1, and St. Louis never got even. Peterson allowed two earned on three hits in 5.2 innings, and the bullpen gave up one run the rest of the way. José Fermín's solo shot in the second was the Cardinals' only answer until Winn and Torres each drove in a run in the sixth to make it 5-3. Nico Hoerner's two-run homer in the ninth — his fifth — put it out of reach, and the Cubs left nine on and still scored seven, which is what fourteen hits will do.
