Robbie Ray threw 92 pitches across five innings and only 51 were strikes — five walks, and two of the runners who walked came in on Christian Walker's single to center in the third. Cam Smith put Houston ahead in the second with his 14th homer, a line drive to left center on a 0-1 sinker at 93.5 mph, and came back in the sixth with No. 15, a fly ball to left. Two homers to the same field in one night is a hitter seeing the ball well, and San Diego could not answer enough to test it. Jackson Merrill tripled for the second time this season and Fernando Tatis Jr. homered for the 10th, but the Padres stranded seven and never pulled even. Josh Hader needed 17 pitches for the ninth and gave up nothing.
