Chris Sale struck out nine in six innings on 108 pitches and gave up one earned run. He lost. Brandon Pfaadt struck out seven in seven on 87 pitches and gave up none. Sale threw 79 strikes — the most of any pitcher in this game — and did not walk a batter, and still took the loss, because the Braves managed three hits all night. The only run off him came in the first, when Gabriel Moreno's soft grounder to first scored Geraldo Perdomo. Tim Tawa's ninth-inning home run, a solo shot on an 89.5 mph slider, was insurance Arizona did not need. Pfaadt did not walk a batter either. Atlanta had three hits, left three on, and was shut out at home.
