The Buzz — Tuesday, September 29

Four names on the eve of the Wild Card Series, and under each the number that says whether the plan holds or the push is too fast.

Aaron Judge

The take Judge calf status and live BP push for WC vs Sox

The soleus strain came Sept. 16, and a moderate grade typically needs three weeks. The roster is due at 10 a.m. Tuesday — 12 days, not three weeks, and that gap is the story. Monday's live BP produced two walks, a groundout, a strikeout looking, and a home run in batting practice. He can hit. Hitting was never the worry.

He has not run — not on the field, not on the basepaths, only on an anti-gravity treadmill. He wants right field, not DH. The PPP injection was meant to compress a timeline the injury wants at three weeks, and Judge said he has been "doing a lot of convincing" — a player negotiating with his medical staff, not one cleared.

Boone's plan is to proceed without him against the Red Sox. The risk is named: reinjury, including to the Achilles, from a calf that has not reached three weeks. The crowd wants him in the lineup. The calf has not said it is ready, and the calf is what has to run.

Chris Sale

The take Sale starts Braves WC Game 1 vs Phillies after elite year

The regular season says ace: 14-9, 2.16 ERA, 200 strikeouts in 162.2 innings, third in MLB in ERA among qualifiers. Against the Phillies specifically, he posted a 2.08 ERA in four starts this year and the Braves won all four. That is a mountain of evidence.

The October record is 7.24 across seven postseason starts, and his last playoff appearance was 2021. The regular-season line is not in dispute. The question is whether that arm and a 7.24 October ERA can hold in a best-of-three, and the answer comes Tuesday at 2 p.m. The crowd is right to be confident. The history says wait.

Matthew Boyd

The take Cubs name Boyd Game 1 starter vs Padres

Counsell's choice is not about stuff — it is about who has done this before. Boyd went 10-5 with a 3.91 ERA in 22 starts, solid mid-rotation numbers after injuries shortened his first two months. Last October he started Game 1 of this same series against these same Padres and gave up one run in 4 1/3, and the Cubs won. He threw seven innings of one-run ball against the Marlins on Thursday. Gausman's shoulder made the decision easier. Boyd got the ball because he has held it in this spot before.

Michael King

The take Padres ace King starts Wild Card Game 1 vs Cubs

185 innings, 32 starts — both career highs, and both are the reason he has the ball rather than someone the Padres are making do with. King went 12-10 with a 3.21 ERA and 159 strikeouts this season, and before a final regular-season clunker, he ran off eight straight quality starts with a 1.95 ERA and 40 strikeouts. He said Monday he plans on going more than one inning, which sounds like a throwaway line until you remember his postseason history is relief work, not starting.

The clunker matters only if it started something. The eight starts before it say it did not. He re-signed to pitch games like this at home, and the Cubs' left-handed Game 1 starter is the matchup the Padres wanted. King earned the assignment over a full season — what he does with it Tuesday night is the only open question.

The decision that doesn't come back

The two National League openers are set — Sale against Luzardo at 2 p.m. in Atlanta, King against Boyd at night in San Diego — and both are matchups the crowd can argue with real numbers on both sides. Sale's regular season ranks third in MLB in ERA and his October ERA is 7.24. King threw 185 innings and has eight straight quality starts behind one clunker. The American League question is simpler and stranger: the Yankees may roster a player who has not run on a baseball surface in 12 days, in a best-of-three, because he hit a home run in batting practice. If Judge plays and pulls up, they don't just lose Game 1 — they lose him for however long October lasts. That is the one call today that Game 2 cannot fix.

Trend signal from Reddit and X. No fact is taken on a poster's word — every one is verified against and sourced from ESPN, MLB.com, Associated Press, Chicago Sun-Times, The San Diego Union-Tribune. The Buzz comments; it never files a call.
