Garrett Crochet and Andrew Abbott matched each other through six — Crochet allowed three hits and struck out eight on 80 pitches, Abbott gave up seven and struck out four on 83 — and neither bullpen cracked until Pierce Johnson came in for the seventh. Ceddanne Rafaela's single to center on a 95.4 mph fastball at 2-2 scored Marcelo Mayer, and that was the run that separated the game. Roman Anthony's single in the ninth left his bat at 112.3 mph and traveled 15 feet, and Boston added one more before Aroldis Chapman threw 11 pitches to close it.
