Eight innings of two-hit baseball from Ranger Suarez and six and two-thirds of three-hit work from Casey Mize produced zero runs through nine, and the game turned on a ground ball to right field in the tenth — Masataka Yoshida's single that scored Jarren Duran on a 95.0 mph four-seam fastball. Will Vest took the loss despite not allowing an earned run, the placed runner doing the damage, and Garrett Whitlock got the win for a clean tenth. Jahmai Jones had two of Boston's four hits, both struck hard, his double at 109.6 mph off the bat and his single at 108.4. Detroit managed four hits and left four on base. The two starters combined for fourteen and two-thirds innings and allowed no earned runs between them, and neither figured in the decision.
