McDonald went seven innings, allowed two hits, struck out eight, walked nobody, and threw 81 pitches — the kind of start that turns a two-run first into a lock. Both clubs scored in the first: Merrill's fourth homer for San Diego, then Schmitt's fifth and a Devers single for San Francisco. The Giants added a run in the sixth on Devers's sacrifice fly to Tatis Jr., and Ramón Laureano's 447-foot home run in the ninth brought San Diego within one before Kilian struck out two to close it. The Padres had three hits all night.
