Anthony Volpe's first home run of the year came in the second inning, by which point the Yankees already led 4-0 — Cody Bellinger and Amed Rosario had gone deep in the first off Bailey Falter, who recorded six outs and gave up seven earned runs. Volpe added an RBI single in the third, part of a four-run frame that included a Bellinger two-run single and a Grisham groundout. Cam Schlittler threw six innings of one-run ball with six strikeouts on 77 pitches, and Ryan Yarbrough covered the final three for the save. The Royals used five pitchers, and none of them threw a clean inning.
