Everything that mattered happened in the first inning. Max Kepler walked with the bases loaded to force in Arizona's only run, and then Jake Cronenworth hit a 1-2 fastball 384 feet to right with two on. Three-run homer, his third of the year. Jackson Merrill had singled in Fernando Tatis Jr. just before that. Four runs, and San Diego had enough. Germán Márquez gave up one unearned run across five innings. Zac Gallen took the loss — six innings, four earned, three walks. Mason Miller struck out two in a perfect ninth. Arizona managed five hits and didn't score after the first.
