The 3rd inning is where Washington lost this. Both clubs scored in the frame — Keibert Ruiz went yard and Dylan Crews singled in a run — but San Diego's answer was Jackson Merrill's two-run triple on a sharp fly to right. Merrill homered again in the 5th and again in the 7th, and his RBI single in the 8th made it four hits on the night. Jackson Kent needed 72 pitches to record nine outs, and the Nationals never got closer than four after that.
