Steven Cruz entered the eighth with a 5-4 lead and gave up two hits and two runs — the second was Brandon Lowe's home run to right center, his thirty-third of the year. Ronny Simon's home run in the second was the first of his season, a two-run shot on an 80.5 mph changeup, and it gave Pittsburgh a lead that held until the seventh. Jac Caglianone's single in the seventh put Kansas City ahead, and Nick Loftin's single followed it — two line drives, two RBI, and a lead that lasted exactly one inning. Camilo Doval gave up two runs in the seventh to blow Pittsburgh's first lead, and Luke Weaver pitched a clean eighth to get the win.
