Herrera's first home run left the bat at 111.1 mph and traveled 439 feet, the hardest contact of the night. His second, a solo shot to left-center in the 8th, tied the game, and Leo Bernal followed with a two-run homer that put St. Louis ahead for good. Washington had taken the lead two innings earlier on CJ Abrams's 31st of the year, a two-run shot that was all Quinn Mathews would allow across seven innings. Jake Irvin struck out eight in five and a third and handed a 3-2 lead to a bullpen that gave it back before the inning ended.
