Jared Jones struck out five over four one-hit innings, and Ty Madden followed with three more: zero hits, zero runs, three strikeouts on 36 pitches. Detroit's two runs came in the seventh on solo homers from Kevin McGonigle, his 18th, and Eduardo Valencia, whose ball traveled 443 feet at 109.8 mph off the bat. Pittsburgh had been up 4-0 since Billy Cook's double in the fourth scored Nick Gonzales. From the eighth through the ninth, Detroit did not reach base.
