Adley Rutschman

The take Orioles trade franchise catcher Rutschman to Red Sox

The crowd sees the face of the franchise shipped to a division rival, and the emotion is genuine — the No. 1 overall pick in 2019, a three-time All-Star, the player Baltimore's rebuild was built around. But Rutschman's .764 OPS and 8 home runs in 67 games this year are a solid catcher's line, not a star's, and the Orioles were 54-58, 2.5 games out of a Wild Card spot.

He is on the 10-day IL with left wrist inflammation, not due back until mid-August. What Boston bought is a premium defender with one remaining year of club control for a team that went 23-3 since July 2 and sits 60-51. Elias said the prospect return overwhelmed him and the affection weighed heavily, but it was the right thing to do. He is right. At 54-58, the Orioles were sellers, and the face of the rebuild became the price of the next one.

Tarik Skubal

The take Blockbuster Skubal trade to Dodgers draws return criticism

The criticism is that the Tigers got fleeced, and it deserves a hearing. Skubal is the back-to-back AL Cy Young winner, 7-5 with a 2.79 ERA and 116 strikeouts in 16 starts, a free agent after this season — and Detroit moved him for Zyhir Hope (MLB No. 25), River Ryan (MLB No. 68, coming off Tommy John), and Brady Smith. Hope at MLB No. 25 and Ryan at MLB No. 68 is a real return. It is not a franchise-altering one, and the industry let Scott Harris hear about it.

Harris called the notion they should have waited 24-48 hours garbage and said the organizations involved put in their max offers. That is defensible — except Skubal's camp made clear he wanted free agency, which left Detroit with no leverage and no future. The Tigers were not choosing between Skubal and a bigger package. They were choosing between prospects now and nothing in November.

Skubal dismissed the Dodgers-blaming — every team could have traded for him, he said, and he does not sympathize with the criticism. He is right that the Dodgers did what contenders do. The question is whether Detroit did what sellers should, and the answer depends on whether Hope and Ryan become what the Tigers need them to become. The deal is done. The verdict is not.

Casey Mize

The take Mize traded Tigers to Padres at deadline with Skubal

Lost in the Skubal fallout is that the Tigers moved a second starter, and this one might age better than people think. Mize posted a 2.70 ERA with a 0.99 WHIP across 16 starts — career-best numbers from the No. 1 overall pick in 2018 who made the All-Star team in 2025. The Padres gave up Kash Mayfield, their No. 2 prospect, for a rental.

The catch is the groin. Mize had two IL stints this season, and his fastball was down about 1.5 mph on July 25, which got him scratched. San Diego still closed the deal, which tells you what their medical review found. A 2.70 ERA with a nagging soft-tissue issue is still a 2.70 ERA, and the Padres just bought a proven arm for October at a price they could live with.

Luis Arraez

The take Phillies got batting champ Arraez from Giants for playoffs

The Phillies were tied for 28th in baseball with a .304 OBP and had scored one or zero runs 26 times. That is the whole case. Arraez leads the NL at .324 with 21 strikeouts in 464 plate appearances. A three-time batting champion who almost never strikes out is the most targeted fix a contact-starved lineup could find, and the infield reshuffle — Stott to third, Bohm to first, Harper to right — tells you this is not a bench move.

Kevin Gausman

The take Gausman traded from Jays to Cubs at deadline

Gausman has thrown 127.1 innings across 23 starts this year with a 4.38 ERA, and that last number is why the price was Ty Southisene and Brett Bateman rather than a haul. What the Cubs bought is the October resume — a 2.93 ERA over 30 2/3 innings in the 2025 postseason, including Game 1 starts in the ALDS and ALCS plus two World Series starts.

Toronto is selling after a disappointing follow-up to their 2025 World Series appearance, and the elevated ERA is the reason a pitcher with that track record was available at all. He has looked stronger recently, and a starter with that many October innings does not need to be at his best to matter in a race. The Cubs bought durability and experience at a discount, and both tend to pay off in September.
