Nine home runs since the All-Star break lead the majors, and the crowd is right to flag the surge. The number that settles it is 431 — the projected distance of Monday night's two-run shot to center on an 83 mph changeup, flipping a 2-1 deficit against the best team in baseball into a 3-2 Padres win. It was his 19th of the season and his third in as many games, the third time in his career he has homered in three straight. A player who does something three times has a habit.

San Diego has won 13 of 17 and sits one game back of the third NL wild card. Mason Miller earned his NL-leading 30th save to close it. The sellout crowd got the blast. The standings got the win that keeps the chase live.

The take Giants lose Chapman for the year to core surgery

This season was already lost at the plate before the body confirmed it. The .235 average and career-low .692 OPS over 84 games were the line of a hitter in decline, and the core muscle injury — discomfort since April, a hernia component, on the injured list since July 1 — was the body agreeing with the stat sheet. A 33-year-old with a six-year, $151 million contract through 2030 and five Gold Gloves will return next spring. The glove will play. The bat has questions that surgery does not answer.

Devin Williams

The take Williams to IL with shoulder strain, Senga gets the save

A 4.66 ERA and a right shoulder strain have turned a three-year, $51 million closer into a question mark. Williams is 3-2 with 16 saves and three blown chances in 42 appearances, and the shoulder has been building toward the IL for days — he was unavailable last week with fatigue, returned Friday and gave up two runs, and went on the 15-day IL Monday, retroactive to August 8. Andy Green says the club does not believe it is long-term.

What the Mets do next is the part that lasts. Kodai Senga, a starter by trade, pitched a scoreless ninth Monday night for his first career save in an 8-5 win over the Braves. If Senga takes the ninth and runs with it, the reshuffle outlives the 15-day window. The contract says Williams is the closer. The shoulder says that is not guaranteed.

Tarik Skubal

The take Skubal's home debut: nerves and six strikeouts in Dodger blue

The Dodgers traded three prospects for a rental, and the home debut was a 95-pitch, five-inning start in which Jac Caglianone drove in all three runs against him. That is the line, and the line is the story. The word "nerves" is doing too much work in the crowd's take — Skubal himself called the adrenaline "all good stuff," and every pitcher feels it the first time he wears new colors at home. A two-time Cy Young winner who says a start was special is describing care, not a collapse.

What the five innings show is a pitcher still calibrating. He walked two, hit a batter, and left trailing 3-2. Roberts had predicted an electric night and got decent. But Skubal retired six straight after the Caglianone homer and ended the fifth by striking him out on a changeup. The finish was sharper than the opening.

Two starts as a Dodger, six strikeouts in each. The Dodgers won 6-5. Royals manager Matt Quatraro said his club's plan was to drive the pitch count and get Skubal out after five, and it worked. That is what a lineup does to an ace in a new uniform. The rental clock is ticking. The adjustment is not finished, and it does not need to be yet.

Three IL stints this season, and the last one cost him three weeks in a new city. Boston sent five players to Baltimore for Rutschman, Jake Rogers, and cash — a deadline deal that moved a three-time All-Star catcher across the AL East. His rehab at Triple-A Worcester checked every box: a two-run double, two walks, a caught stealer, and a clean day at DH. Chad Tracy confirmed the Tuesday activation after Monday's 2-1 loss in Toronto. The wrist held up under game stress. Now it has to hold up in games that matter.
