José Buttó faced seven hitters in the eighth, walked four, and gave up four earned runs in a third of an inning — eight strikes in 28 pitches, the line of a man who could not find the zone. Adrian Houser had given San Francisco five and a third innings of one-run ball and took the loss, which is what happens when the bullpen behind you forgets where the strike zone is. Nick Pivetta struck out eight and allowed one hit over five innings before the relievers behind him made the margin comfortable. Mason Miller struck out three of the four men he faced to close it.
