Dustin May threw 75 pitches — 54 for strikes — across six innings and gave up one earned run without walking a batter. The Cardinals scored twice in the fifth off Zack Kelly, first on Thomas Saggese's RBI single and then on José Fermín's sacrifice fly, and that was the margin. Victor Scott II's second-inning sac fly had opened the scoring, and Trevor Story's fourth-inning groundout had briefly put Boston ahead when second baseman JJ Wetherholt threw it away. The Red Sox collected five hits and left five on base. St. Louis left twelve men on, which is a lot of traffic for a team that scored three times.
