Luis Severino struck out eight over seven innings and gave up one earned run, and Michael Wacha needed 105 pitches to get through five. Wacha walked four and left trailing 4-1. Lawrence Butler's three-run homer in the fourth — 105.6 mph off the bat, 404 feet to right center — was the swing that separated the game. Bobby Witt Jr. scored twice for Kansas City without driving in a run, and Michael Massey's sacrifice fly in the ninth was too late. Kansas City left five on base and committed an error in a game where the Athletics played clean.
