Jason Adam entered with a lead in the seventh and left without it — J.T. Realmuto tied it on a 94.3 mph fastball at 2-2, and Kyle Schwarber put Philadelphia ahead on an 88.0 mph changeup at 0-1. Adam faced five hitters, gave up three hits and two runs in two-thirds of an inning, and took the loss. Cristopher Sánchez was the reason the lead mattered: seven innings, four hits, one run, eight strikeouts on 84 pitches. Xander Bogaerts was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the eighth to bring San Diego within one, but Jhoan Duran struck out two in a clean ninth.
