Yordan Alvarez hit a two-run home run and then a grand slam — six RBI before the second inning — and Luinder Avila recorded two outs while allowing eight earned on 49 pitches. Kansas City answered with five in their half, and the rest of the night was the Royals climbing toward a lead they never reached. They got within two on a ninth-inning run before Josh Hader closed it in order. Tatsuya Imai, the Houston starter, also recorded two outs and also gave up five. Two starters, one inning, thirteen earned runs between them.
